What happens in episode 1
The boyfriend arrives at his girlfriend’s family gathering over Halloween weekend, already nervous. The first person to take an interest in him is her stepmom, Mia Malkova.
She says she knows exactly who he is, and asks whether he has seen all of her work. He admits he has only seen a few, and she seems to enjoy the honesty. The girlfriend, Camilla, is close by, and he is clearly uneasy with the attention.
Then the family turns to a party game. Hide-and-seek is set for 10 o’clock with the lights going out. Mia says she always hides first, and she makes the game a challenge: whoever finds her first earns a reward she does not spell out.
The episode ends with the lights about to go out. The boyfriend has not yet worked out how to get out of the game, and the stepmom has already set the terms.
